Women Get Past ACU, 61-48

WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University shook off a slow start and rediscovered its shooting touch to come away with a 61-48 victory over visiting Abilene Christian University in women’s basketball action Thursday in Weatherford.

The Bulldogs, 6-8 on the year, outscored the Wildcats 41-22 in the game’s final 20 minutes and dug themselves out of a six-point halftime hole early in the second half.

Trenice Hines started a 16-2 run over an eight minute span in which the Bulldogs took control of the game. Hines, who finished with 10 points, buried a three-pointer at the 12:09 mark to give SWOSU a 39-38 lead. SWOSU would not trail again as the Bulldogs eventually built it to 52-40 when Jenna Sprague came off the bench and knocked down two free throws with 4:23 to play.

SWOSU made 13-of-26 (50%) shots in the second half compared to making only nine-of-29 (31%) during the game’s first 20 minutes. ACU was miserable both halves making just 14-of-53 (26%) the entire game.

Andrea Oldham was the top scorer for SWOSU with 14 points while Grace Anne Jones was next with 12 points. Dru Tomaszewski had her first double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Alex Guiton led ACU with 17 points. The Wildcats fall to 10-6 with the loss.

SWOSU’s next game will be at home Saturday at 6 p.m. against Angelo State University weather permitting.
