WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s defense of its Lone Star Conference North Division women’s title started on the wrong foot as the Bulldogs were beaten 61-49 by visiting East Central University Wednesday in Weatherford.

SWOSU was unable to protect a small halftime lead and watched as the Tigers took control of the game midway through the second half to come away with the important victory.

The Bulldogs, who dropped to 6-9, 0-1 in the LSC North, were led by Andrea Oldham with 15 points. ECU, now 8-7 and 1-0, were led by Lacey Goldwire with 14 points.

The Bulldogs managed just two points in the final 3:26 and were outscored by the Tigers 12-2 during that span. SWOSU’s Dru Tomaszewski sank a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs to within two points at 49-47 but the Tigers responded with Jastin Flenory scoring the next six points to put ECU back in control.

The Bulldogs had control for much of the first half leading by as many as seven points before taking a 22-21 lead into the locker room. SWOSU managed to make just eight-of-31 (26%) of its field goal attempts in the second half while the Tigers connected on 13-of-30 (43%) of their shots.

Grace Anne Jones had 10 points while Tomaszewski and Trenice Hines each added nine points for the Bulldogs.

SWOSU will next play Saturday against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. in Durant.
