January 24, 2007

EDMOND – Southwestern Oklahoma State University delivered its best game of the year when it needed it the most getting back in the Lone Star Conference North Division race with a hard-fought 73-67 victory over the University of Central Oklahoma Wednesday in Edmond.

Grace Anne Jones and Andrea Oldham each had 22 points for the Bulldogs who moved to 7-10 and 1-3 in the LSC North.

Oldham gave the Bulldogs the lead for good when she connected on a layup with 44 seconds to play putting SWOSU ahead 69-67 lead. Jones then delivered a pair of clutch free throws with 11 seconds to play to keep the Bulldogs lead safe in the closing seconds

SWOSU’s win was impressive considering how they started the game. The Bulldogs stumbled out the starting gate allowing UCO an early 12-4 lead. The Bronchos built their margin to 25-12 midway through the first half and kept it until the seven-minute mark when the Bulldogs began to climb back.

Oldham scored back-to-baskets and the Bulldogs had cut the lead inside of 10 points. SWOSU would outscore UCO 18-4 during the next six minutes and actually took the lead when Trenice Hines scored on a layup to give the Bulldogs a 36-35 lead with 1:32 to play in the first half. The two teams went to the locker room with UCO ahead 40-38.

SWOSU ended the game making a season-best 46% of their field goal attempts on 32-of-69 shooting. The Bulldogs dominated the rebounding category pulling down 44 to UCO’s 29. Jones, a 5-8 guard, ended the game with her first career double-double pulling down 11 rebounds to go with her 22 points.

The Bronchos, who were led by Jennifer Bullis with 15 points, dropped to 6-10 and 0-2 in the LSC North.
