Women Win Second Straight, Beat NSU

WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University shut down Northeastern State University in the final minutes and won for the second straight time as the Bulldogs bettered visiting Northeastern State, 50-41, in a women’s basketball game Saturday in Weatherford.

Grace Anne Jones had 11 points and led the Bulldogs to an 8-10 overall mark and 2-2 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. NSU, which was led by Wendy Fehrenbech with 12 points, fell to 12-6 and 3-1.

SWOSU held NSU to just three points in the game’s final 11 minutes and none after the four-minute mark. The Bulldogs scored the game’s final 10 points to win by a comfortable margin.

SWOSU’s Trenice Hines delivered the biggest shot drilling a three-pointer with 3:03 to play putting the Bulldogs ahead for good at 43-41. Andrea Oldham added a layup and Jones put the game out of reach with a three-pointer of her own to put SWOSU ahead 48-41 with 1:07 to play.

Defensively, SWOSU made life miserable for the Lady Reds on the offensive end. NSU made just 15-of-52 shots for 29%. The Lady Reds made only eight baskets in the second half and only one after the 11-minute mark.

SWOSU managed to make 19-of-51 shots from the field for 37%. SWOSU did a better job rebounding taking down 39 to NSU’s 33.

The game was close throughout with seven lead changes and was tied five other times. SWOSU’s biggest lead came at the final buzzer.

Oldham and Dru Tomaszewski each added eight points for the Bulldogs.

SWOSU will next play Monday at Cameron University. Tipoff for the women’s game is at 6 p.m.
