Women Lose Against Cameron, 78-66

January 30, 2007

LAWTON – Southwestern Oklahoma State University got a career-best effort by  Dru Tomaszewski but the senior got little help elsewhere as the Bulldogs were 78-66 losers in a women’s basketball game Monday against Cameron University in Lawton.

Tomaszewski ended the game with 26 points and helped lead a second half surge that saw the Bulldogs get within three points. Tomaszewski drilled a three-pointer to trim Cameron’s led to 48-44 with 12:55 to play. The Aggies then quickly regrouped and went on a 9-1 run and took control when Shantel Whitaker sunk a three-point basket of her own to give Cameron a 57-46 lead with 9:12 to play.

The loss snapped what had been a two-game win streak for the Bulldogs and lowered their overall record to 8-11 and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. Cameron, which was led by Whitaker with 19 points, improved to 3-16 and 1-4 in the LSC North.

SWOSU fell behind from the outset and spent the majority of the first half playing catch up. The Bulldogs were down by as many as eight points in the first half and twice had the Aggies advantage reduced to two before Cameron settled for a 35-30 lead at the half.

SWOSU had only one other player – Trenice Hines – reach double figures in scoring with 11 points. Most of those came late when the outcome was already decided.

The Bulldogs made just 34% from the field on 19-of-55 attempts while the Aggies hit 52% 28-of-54 of their field goal attempts. SWOSU out rebounded Cameron 38-29 but turned it over five more times to negate rebound advantage.

The Bulldogs will next play at home Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
