Women Tamed by Lions, 80-60

WEATHERFORD – Southwestern Oklahoma State University was unable to slow front running Texas A&M-Commerce and ended up losing to the Lions, 80-60, Saturday in a women’s basketball game played in Weatherford.

The loss was the Bulldogs second straight and dropped their overall record to 8-12 and 2-4 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. TAMC remained in first place in the division improving to 17-7 and 5-1 in the LSC North.

Ashlea Hoffman and Jessica Bailey each had 12 points to lead SWOSU in scoring while teamate Grace Anne Jones was next with nine points.

Britney Jordan had 22 points for the Lions who had three players score 14 or more points in the game.

Bailey and Trenice Hines gave SWOSU an early 11-5 lead by knocking down a pair of three-pointers in the game’s early minutes. TAMC quickly closed the gap and took the lead for good on Tradawn Short’s three-pointer to put them ahed 14-11 with 16:47 to play.

The Lions kept a small margin before entering the halftime break ahead 38-31.

Andrea Oldham led an early second-half charge by the Bulldogs and helped SWOSU close to within four points when she made a short basket to make it 44-40 with 12:44 to play. Commerce again answered going on a 17-2 run of their own. Short scored on a layup with 9:18 to play and the outcome was no longer in doubt. The Lions were in control at 61-42.

SWOSU ended the game making 22-of-58 shots for 38% while the Lions connected on 31-of-61 attempts for 50%. The Bulldogs turned the ball over three more times than TAMC and were outrebounded by 13.

SWOSU will next play on the road Wednesday as they face East Central University in Ada. The next home game is Saturday, April 10 against Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
