Women Take Down UIW

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University will head into the holiday season in high spirits as the women’s basketball team came through as 62-56 winners against visiting Incarnate Word Thursday in Weatherford. The win was SWOSU’s fourth straight and improved its overall record to 7-3 on the year.

Lucy Ramon scored 19 points and Tobey Beer added 11 for the Bulldogs who will now enjoy a 14-day break before resuming play on January.

The Bulldogs led throughout the game but had a difficult time putting away the Cardinals until late. UIW dropped to 3-7 after the loss.

SWOSU took its biggest lead of the game at 47-37 when Jessica Giblet swished two free throws with 11:57 to play. However, UIW then went on a 9-0 run and when Cinammon Kava scored on a driving layup the lead was trimmed to 47-46 with 8:23 to play.

Ramon then went to work and scored SWOSU’s next eight points and pushed the Bulldogs back in front 56-51 with 2:23 to play. UIW was then forced to foul down the stretch and the Bulldogs made enough free throws to withstand any attempted Cardinal rally.

SWOSU ended the game making 47% of its shots on 21-of-44 shooting. UIW made just 34% on 19-of-55 shots. The Bulldogs, the Lone Star Conference’s top rebounding team, showed why in that category out rebounding its opponent by a 40-28 margin.
