Women Go Cold in Loss
January 19, 2008
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University let what appeared to be a certain win turn into a unsettling loss as the Bulldogs were beaten 54-53 at Northeastern State University in demoralizing fashion.
The Bulldogs were outscored 17-2 in the final six minutes by and saw a 14-point lead come undone thanks to a combination of miscues and poor shooting from the floor and the free throw line. The loss dropped SWOSU to 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. NSU improved to 9-8 and 2-0 in the division.
NSU’s Sarah Millar provided the game winner in the Lady Reds’ amazing comeback by connecting on a three-pointer with four seconds to play. NSU had not been in front since the early moments of the first half.
Grace Anne Fath had 14 points to lead SWOSU while teammate Tobey Beer added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
SWOSU had a 14-point lead on three different occasions in the second half. The last coming when Lucy Ramon hit one-of-two free throws to put the Bulldogs ahead 51-37 with 6:12 to play.
SWOSU would not score again from the field and only two Ramon free throws at the 3:32 mark would be all the Bulldogs could muster in the pivotal moments.
The Bulldogs were sharp over the game’s first 20 minutes making 67% of their shots on 14-of-21 attempts while posting a 35-27 lead. The second half was a different story as SWOSU made only 32% (seven-of-22) of its shots and scored just 18 points.
NSU made eight three-pointers during the game, three of which came in the final six minutes.
SWOSU returns home Wednesday, Jan. 23 to continue LSC North Division play when it hosts Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
