Women Stopped by UCO

February 6, 2008

EDMOND, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University had its opponent right where it wanted but allowed Central Oklahoma to wiggle free and escape with a 70-60 victory Wednesday in Edmond.

The loss dropped SWOSU to 12-9 overall and 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division while UCO improved to 16-5 and 4-2 in division play.

Lucy Ramon led SWOSU with 14 points as the Bulldogs put four players in double figures. Grace Anne Fath added 12 points and Tobey Beer and Sheri Yost each scored 10 for SWOSU who saw its two-game winning streak snapped.

UCO was led by Lizzie Brenner with 14 points.

SWOSU had command much of the game leading by 10 points on a number of occasions in the first half before settling for a 36-29 lead at the break. Toby Beer was the offensive sparkplug for the Bulldogs early connecting on all three of her three point attempts.

The loss was only the third time this year SWOSU has lost in 15 games in which it has led at the intermission.

UCO got back the lead back early in the second half and pushed their margin to 45-40 when Brenner made a pair of free throws with 12:38 to play.

The Bulldogs did rally and take the lead one last time when Allie Burden made one of-two free throws to put SWOSU ahead 53-52 with 6:03 to play. The remainder of the game was all UCO as the Bronchos outscored SWOSU 16-4 over the next five minutes to put it out reach

One possession illustrated SWOSU’s frustration when the Bulldogs had four consecutive offensive rebounds but missed a string of five consecutive shots.

Both teams shot the same from the field. SWOSU made 41% of its shots on 20-of-49 attempts while UCO connected at a 42% rate on 23-of-55 attempts. The big difference was in the turnover column where the Bulldogs gave up the ball 24 times compared to UCO’s nine.

SWOSU will next play Saturday on the road against LSC North rival East Central University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Ada.
