Women Fall to Pitt State

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Short-handed Southwestern Oklahoma State University put together a spirited effort but fell short losing to visiting Pittsburg State by a score of 70-57. The loss was SWOSU’s first of the season while PSU improved to 3-1 on the year.

Erin Wright, playing for the injured starter Kadee Carter, had a breakout game for the Bulldogs leading the team with 17 points. She made six-of-nine shots from the field and canned two three-pointers. She was joined in double figures by one other player, Lucy Ramon, who had 13 points. Ramon made five-of-10 shots from the field but connected on only three-of-14 free throw attempts.

As a team SWOSU managed to make just seven-of-25 free throw attempts and finished the game at 28%. The Gorillas were not much better making just 10-of-20 attempts for 50%.

SWOSU stayed within striking distance much of the game and climbed to within nine points when Shanessa Smith converted a three-point play to cut PSU’s lead to 45-36 with 11:40 to play. Pitt State regrouped and went on a 10-3 run to push their advantage back to 16 points at 55-39 with just under eight minutes. The Gorillas were not threatened the remainder of the way as SWOSU never got closer than 11.

SWOSU for the game made 23-of-52 shots for 44% while PSU was 27-of-55 for 49%. The Bulldogs outrebounded PSU 46-39 but hurt themselves with 28 turnovers, nine more than the Gorillas.

SWOSU will next be in action Tuesday night at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
