Women Beaten by Southeastern

January 29, 2009

DURANT, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University's modest two-game win streak came to an abrupt end as the Bulldogs were beaten 76-40 in a women's basketball game Wednesday in Durant. The loss left SWOSU at 6-12 overall and 2-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. SWOSU now must regain its focus and face East Central University in an important matchup Saturday in Weatherford. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

Jenna Sprague had nine points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring. She was followed by Shanessa Smith, Jennifer DeGarmo, Allie Burdan and Courtney Harper each with six points.

Little went right for the Bulldogs against Southeastern which raised its overall record to 12-6 and 3-2 in the division with the victory. SWOSU made only 32% of its shots connecting on 15-of-46 attempts. The Bulldogs made just three-of-22 from three-point distance and finished making just 14%. The 40 points tied a season-low for the Bulldogs. They scored 40 points once before in a December loss to Tarleton State.

Southeastern, which was led in scoring by Destiny Brown with 17 points, made 26-of-55 attempts to finish at 47%

SWOSU matched Southeastern early in the game as Erin Wright opened with a three and Smith and Sprague scored inside to give the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead. Southeastern then caught fire and went on a 19-4 run and built a 25-13 lead with 5:31 to play in the first half.

SOSU took a 32-20 lead into the break.

The margin stayed around the 12-point area until the final 10 minutes of the game before the Bulldogs went ice cold from the field. Smith's basket at the 8:34 mark was the only field goal other than DeGarmo's trey in the final seconds that SWOSU scored in the last 10-plus minutes. Southeastern ended on a 29-4 run and built a 39-point margin before DeGarmo's three with 18 seconds sealed the final at 76-40.
