Women Lose to ECU, 96-58

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University could not overcome a slow start at the outset and were beaten 96-58 by East Central University in women's basketball action Wednesday in Weatherford.

The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 1-17 on the year and 1-4 in Lone Star Conference North Division play. SWOSU will next play Saturday at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Jenna Sprague was the offensive bright spot for the Bulldogs as she scored a season-high 23 points. No other Bulldog reached double figures in scoring but Courtney Harper just missed with nine points.

ECU, which improved to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in division play, was led by Angela Kalanoska and Krista Bullis with 16 points apiece. Four other Tigers reached double figures.

SWOSU found itself down 19-0 after only four minutes of play as ECU made a number of shots despite the tight guard of the Bulldogs.

SWOSU regrouped after that point and made a short run of its own scoring nine straight points. Sprague hit two free throws and ECU's lead was 19-9 with 10:22 to play in the first half. The Tigers then answered with another scoring outburst with a 28-10 run over the next few minutes to re-establish control of the game. The half ended with ECU leading 51-26.

The Bulldogs were unable to cut into ECU's sizeable cushion in the second half. SWOSU eventually found itself down by as many as 43 points before a late run at the end closed the final margin to 38 at 96-58.

SWOSU finished the game making 16-of-56 shots for 29 percent while ECU did better making 54% on 37-of-69 attempts. The Bulldogs were just three-of-28 from three-point distance while the Tigers netted 44% of their treys on 11-of-25 attempts. ECU enjoyed a sizeable advantage in the rebounding category pulling down 53 to SWOSU's 28.
