Team Finishes 7th at LSC

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State University cross country star Stefanie Jones finished among the best of the best at the Lone Star Conference’s annual meet held Saturday at L.E. Ramsey Golf Course in Kingsville, Texas.
Jones placed fifth in the 6,000 meter race with a time of 22:51 to earn her third straight all-conference award. Jones, who had finished fourth and ninth in her two previous LSC meets, was the only SWOSU runner who finished higher than 25th.
Abilene Christian’s run of nine straight league titles ended as Midwestern State placed five runners in the top 20 and won by 26 points over West Texas A&M. MSU was led by top 10 finishers Katie Stepp (4th, 22:35), Lindsey Pate (7th, 23:13) and Kayla Hendrix (10th, 23:36). Andrea Borgman, 17th, and Brittany Barrington, 20th, closed out the Mustangs’ team scoring giving them a total of 58 points.
West Texas A&M narrowly held off East Central for second place, 84-94. Central Oklahoma, Abilene Christian and Angelo State rounded out the top six teams.
SWOSU, a year removed from its highest ever finish when it placed fifth in 2007, placed seventh ahead of Tarleton State, Eastern New Mexico, Texas A&M-Commerce, Texas A&M-Kingsville and Southeastern Oklahoma.
Despite finishing in fifth place as a team, ACU boasted the top two individuals in the conference. Sophomore Winrose Karunda easily won in a time of 21:39. She was followed by teammate Loice Cheboi in a time of 22:15. WT’s Jeniffer Cherono paced the Buffs in a time of 22:21 and was third.
Other SWOSU runners and their finish are as follows: Patty Murphy was 26th with a time of 25:03, Kate Hollenshead was 33rd with a time of 25:57, Melissa Banks was 34th with a time of 25:42 and Emily Haskins was 35th with a time of 25:43.
A total of 12 teams and 74 runners competed in the event.
