Carter's Kick Lifts Blue to 9-6 Win in Spring Game

April 21, 2005

Weatherford, OK - Saxton Carter’s 34-yard field goal with 29 seconds to play lifted the Blue squad to a 9-6 victory over the White team in a spirited intra-squad game that ended spring football practice for Southwestern Oklahoma State University Thursday. Officials estimated a crowd of 850 people took advantage of warm spring night and the free food to watch a Bulldog football team that had been divided into two squads.

Carter’s kick came after Jon Patterson intercepted a pass from White quarterback Willie Sheird giving Blue the ball at the White 36-yard line. Blue quarterback Beau Dodson then connected with wide receiver Danny Howard on a 15-yard pass to the White 16 well inside Carter’s field goal range.

Both teams found their offensive rhythm in the game’s final half after a scoreless first two quarters. Dodson led the Blue offensively completing 12-of-23 passes for 114 yards and one touchdown. The White was led by running back Brandon Wicks who had nine carries for 39 yards. The Blue had 146 yards of total offense to the White’s 65 and had over a four-minute advantage in time of possession.

The Blue scored the game’s first points when wide receiver Chase Pratt snared a 33-yard touchdown pass from Dodson on the final play of the third quarter. The touchdown followed a six-play, 63 yard drive. Pratt, who finished the night with four catches for 61 yards, also had a 20-yard reception in the scoring drive.

The White used a bit of trickery to score on its next possession when Corey Campbell tossed a well-disguised, 19-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Derek Wall. The point-after-kick was missed and the game was tied at 6-6 with 11:10 to play.

The game appeared to be heading towards a 6-6 deadlock before Patterson’s interception gave the Blue new life which resulted in Carter’s successful field goal.

New coach Ryan Held said he was pleased with the overall competitiveness of the game and impressed with the amount of enthusiasm shown not only by his players but the fans in attendance.

“I think people saw what we’re trying to do here,” Held said. “We want our players to be physical and we want them to beat disciplined. I think we had some players step up and raise the level of play during the game. That’s what you hope for.”

Held singled out all-conference lineman Terry Joiner and newly converted defensive back Trent Pratt, the younger brother of Chase, as those who caught his eye for their impact made on the field.

“We’ll take a close look at the film. Everyone got a chance to play, so there is quite of bit evaluating that’s left for the coaches,” Held said. “We owe a big thank you to a lot of people who helped make this event a success in particular the SWOSU Alumni Association and Bar-S for providing the food. It was a great night.”
