Franklin Wins LSC Player-of-Week
September 5, 2006
RICHARDSON, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State linebacker Greg Franklin was recognized by the Lone Star Conference as the North Division Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his efforts in leading the Bulldogs to a stunning 23-17 overtime victory over league powerhouse Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Franklin, a 6-0, 220, sophomore from Midwest City, recorded 11 tackles and led a Bulldog defense that forced the Javelinas to punt on their first four consecutive possessions. Franklin and his teammates then stopped TAMUK on a fourth-and-goal play on their fifth possession.
SWOSU limited the Javelinas to one offensive touchdown and held them to just 257 yards of total offense, more than 100 yards below their season average in 2005.
“Greg had a tremendous game for us,” coach Ryan Held said. “He’s our defensive captain and when he plays well it carries over to the rest. Hopefully, this won’t be the last award he gets from the conference office.”
Franklin has already once before been recognized by the league office. He was the LSC North Player-of-the-Week last year in the Bulldogs opening season win against Oklahoma Panhandle State when he recorded 16 tackles.
Franklin played high school ball at Carl Albert where he was part of two Class 5A state championship teams.
