Bulldogs Roll Past Aggies, 33-14

September 18, 2006

GOODWELL – Southwestern Oklahoma State turned in a dominating performance on both sides of the football to come away with a comfortable 33-14 win against Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday in Goodwell. The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 overall while the Aggies remained winless in three contests.

SWOSU second-year coach Ryan Held, who led OPSU for three seasons between 2002 and 2004, has beaten his former squad each of the last two years as the Bulldogs head man.

“I thought we did a lot of things well offensively and got a chance to see some new players get an opportunity to show what they can do in a game situation,” Held said. “Defensively, we played well at times but had a few penalties that kept drives going for them. Most importantly, we got a win and that’s what we came for.”

SWOSU tailback Reshard Dudley, a transfer from OPSU, had his best game of the season rushing for 118 yards on 16 carries and scoring three times. Dudley’s first score came on the game’s second play after SWOSU used a bit of trickery to catch the Aggies by surprise.

Backup quarterback Beau Dodson was inserted in at receiver and took the ball on a reverse. Dodson then planted his feet and delivered a 61-yard pass to a wide open Johnathan Haggerty who was brought down at the one-yard line. Dudley scored on the next play and SWOSU was up 7-0 with just 31 seconds played in the game.

The Bulldogs then added a pair of scores on a 10-yard touchdown run by Patrick Weaver and later a 76-yard, pass-and-catch from Jimmy Sangster to Steve Ihekona to go up 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Aggies answered back with a scoring drive of their own and when Steven Boone rumbled in from two yards out to trim the Bulldogs advantage to 20-7 with 12:36 to play.

SWOSU wasted no time and reasserted itself on the very next drive moving 80 yards on seven plays. Dudley scored for the second time, this one a four-yard run to give the Bulldogs a 26-7 lead going into the halftime break.

Dudley scored again early in the third quarter to push the margin to 33-7 before the Bulldogs allowed a late score by the Aggies after the outcome had already been determined.

Defensively, SWOSU limited the Aggies to just 223 yards of offense and forced two turnovers. Linebacker, Adam Hooton, another of SWOSU’s transfers from OPSU, was the top Bulldogs tackler with 12 stops. Teammate Jon Patterson was next with six credited tackles.

SWOSU’s next game will be at undefeated (2-0) Abilene Christian University. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the 14,000 seat Shotwell Stadium.
