SWOSU Roughs Up Rangers

August 23, 2007

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Patrick Weaver rushed for a touchdown and returned a punt for another score to help carry Southwestern Oklahoma State University to an easy 33-7 victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State University Thursday in Weatherford.

Weaver, a third-team All-American a year ago, showed again why he is one of the most dangerous offensive players in NCAA Division II ending the game with 161 all-purpose yards.

Weaver scored the game’s first touchdown when he took a reverse 37 yards to put the Bulldogs ahead 9-0 with 10:33 to play in the first period. SWOSU had just moments earlier got on the scoreboard when defensive back Andre Morgan sacked Ranger quarterback Billy Barefield in the endzone for a safety.

The Bulldogs added to their margin when Spenser Daniel converted on a 36-yard field goal to go ahead 12-0 still in the first quarter. Weaver then struck again taking a punt back 87 yards for a score. It’s the third time in his career he has brought back either a kickoff or a punt for a touchdown.

SWOSU quarterback Jimmy Sangster ended the evening connecting on 11-of-17 passes for 206 yards and a touchdown. His 52-yarder to Johnathan Haggerty completed the game’s scoring and put SWOSU ahead 33-7 with 5:33 left to play.

The Bulldogs limited NWOSU to just 173 yards of total offense and kept the Rangers buried on their half of the field most of the night. SWOSU was victimized by 15 penalties that resulted in 167 yards being stepped off against the Bulldogs.

Twice the Bulldogs turned away the Rangers near the goal line once Morgan recovered a fumble at the one-yard line and another time Demarcus Render picked off a pass in the endzone.

Greg Franklin led SWOSU in tackles with nine followed by Ruzell McCoy, LaKendrick Bevil with seven.

SWOSU will again play at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1.
