Day Wins LSC Academic Honor

RICHARDSON, Texas -- Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s record-setting quarterback Steve Day was voted as the Lone Star Conference North Division Academic Player-of-the-Year.

Day was among 11 football players named to the LSC North All-Academic Teams, which recognizes both academic and athletic achievement. The All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes need at least a 3.20 GPA and must be at least a sophomore.

Day, a junior from Edmond, has a 3.59 grade point average in kinesiology.  Day guided the Bulldogs offense  throwing for 2,561 yards to set a single season record. He is the owner of eight school records including most passes completed in a season (225) and career (460), most passes attempted in a season (448) and career (885) and career yards (5,394) and touchdowns in a season (18) and a career (37).

Two other SWOSU players – Steve Ihekona and Evan Jarrett – joined Day on the 11-person team.

Ihekona, a senior from Edmond, carried a 3.37 GPA in business. He was one of the top rushers for SWOSU throughout his career. He ended his four years at SWOSU rushing for 993 yards on 271 carries and scored four touchdowns .

Jarrett, a senior from Visalla, Calif., carried a 3.81 in marketing. He played two years at SWOSU after transferring from California’s College of Sequoias. He finished the season with 18 tackles and was a starter for much of the early portion of the year.
