Transfer Nets Academic Scholarship

March 8, 2010

WEATHERFORD, Okla. - New football player Jonathan Darby was one of a handful of Southwestern Oklahoma State University students that were selected as the recipients of the coveted Weatherford Community Scholarship.

Darby, a transfer from California's Grossmont Junior College, received the $1500 scholarship that is awarded to both Oklahoma residents and non-residents who are transferring and enrolling at SWOSU for the first time.  Darby is a 4.0 student and studying course work for a bachelor's degree in education.

SWOSU Financial Aid Services Counselor Sheila McGee said priority is given to those students who have a completed associate degree. The scholarship is very competitive and based highly on GPA.

This scholarship was started from the sales tax generated from the 3 Times Yes tax passed by the City of Weatherford a few years ago. A similar type sales tax initiative is on the ballot next month which if passed includes the building of a new community events center on campus.

As a football player for Grossmont, Darby finished 2009 as the team's second-leading tackler with 57 stops. He also had four interceptions and a fumble recovery. His team finished with an 8-3 record and participated in the U.S. Bank Beach Bowl where they beat El Camino, 27-22. He is a graduate of West Hills High School in San Diego.
