RICHARDSON, Texas -- Southwestern Oklahoma senior Greg Koch was named the Male Golf Academic Player of the Year and joined four others on the All-Academic Team last Sunday when Lone Star Conference officials announced the academic awards for men’s golf at a pre-championship banquet.
Koch, a senior chemistry major from Burkburnett, Texas, earned recognition as the LSC’s top male student-athlete with his perfect 4.00 GPA average. He was joined by Central Oklahoma’s Todd Dayton, Northeastern State’s Kevin King and Brian Ward and West Texas A&M’s Paul Slaughter on the LSC All-Academic Team.
NSU’s Ward, a senior business administration major from Stillwater, Okla., is the only repeat selection on the All-Academic Team, while Koch becomes the second straight SWOSU golfer to earn Academic Player of the Year acclaim, following former teammate Brian Hostetler’s selection a year ago.
To be eligible for LSC academic honors, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.20 grade point average and have reached sophomore status both athletically and academically. The Academic Player of Year award and All-Academic Team are selected from the list of academically qualified players, with the league’s sports information directors voting on the basis of both academic and athletic achievement. All qualifying student-athletes not selected for the All-Academic Team are then named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
In addition to the five players on the All-Academic Team, six more gained Commissioner’s Honor Roll acclaim.
All together, East Central had a conference-high three honorees, while Abilene Christian, Central Oklahoma and Northeastern state had two each. Six of the nine LSC men’s teams were represented with at least one honoree.
