SWOSU Finishes 17th in Opening Tourney

ABILENE, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State regrouped in the final day of play at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate and shaved 16 strokes off a disappointing first-day score to card a final-round 301. The Bulldogs finished in 17th place with a two-day score of 618, two shots ahead of last place Incarnate Word.
Abilene Christian, the tournament host, rallied from a six-stroke deficit to pull out a three-stroke team victory at the Diamondback Golf Club. ACU shot a final-round 280 to finish at 566, while St. Edward's finished at 569 after firing rounds of 284 and 285.
First-day leader Cameron - which won the team title at last year's tournament - faded from first to third after following its opening-round 280 with a final-around 297 to finish at 577, three strokes ahead of fourth-place Midwestern State (580). Texas A&M-Commerce finished fifth at 583.
ACU’s Curtis Harris, who fired rounds of 69 on Monday and 68 on Tuesday to finish at 137 and win the individual medalist title. Harris was especially tough on the back nine Tuesday when he shot 33 to finish out his round of 68.
The Bulldogs second-day score was helped along by Scott Kulcyzycki (So., Canada) posting a one-under par score of 70. Kulczycki’s score on Tuesday was bettered by only five of the 87 golfers that played the course. Overall, he finished in a tie for 35th with a 36-hole total of 148, six-over par.
Other SWOSU golfers and their finishes are as follows: Brad Dickson in 42nd place with a seven-over, 149, Luke Phillips in 81st place with a 19-over, 161, Cody Salo in 82nd place with a 20-over, 162 and Ty Caffey in 85th place with 23-over, 165.
SWOSU’s next tournament will begin Sept. 18 at the Territory Classic in Duncan.
