Alumni Win Golf Challenge

August 28, 2007

HINTON, Okla. -- The much-anticipated grudge match between former Southwestern Oklahoma State University golf greats and those actively playing for the Bulldogs was won by the old timers. The reunion and golf tournament was part of a two-day fundraising event designed in part to allow Bulldog golfers past and present a chance to meet and play competitively in a relaxed social environment. The tournament, called the Blue/Gray Cup was played at Hinton’s Sugar Creek Golf Course Saturday, Aug. 18.

The Alumni Team, known as the Gray Team, won 19-9 in a rain shortened event. Sunday’s round was unplayable because of the torrential rain that fell in the area from Tropical Storm Erin.

Alumnus Shannon Friday and Shawn Scott paced the Gray team sloshing their way to a six-under par round of 65 during Saturday’s round played in a steady drizzle. Senior Pat McCarthy from London, England and senior Tyler Porter from
Tonganoxie, Kan. led the Current Bulldogs/Blue Team with a three-under par round
of 68 to capture four of their team's nine points.

Former SWOSU All-Americans Cory Smith and Joel Burleson teamed up to post a four-under par round of 67 to rack up another two points for the Gray Team.  Former
All-Conference and Southwestern Invitational Medalists Matt Jett and Bret
Matlock carded a solid round of 68 for the Gray which allowed
them to pull away with a decisive 10-point cushion heading into the final
round singles matches.

Unfortunately, the sky opened up and the rains came down making the course unplayable for Sunday’s deciding round. The rains were so severe that they completely washed away a dam between holes 16 and 17 leaving a massive opening down the home stretch of holes in the carved out Sugar Creek Canyon Golf Course.

The rains did not wash away the overwhelming success of the first ever Blue/Gray Cup which managed to attract dozens of participants from a wide, wide span of years.
