Golf Finishes 8th at Tourney

ABILENE, Texas – Luke Phillips and Tyler Porter led a second-day surge that saw the Southwestern Oklahoma State University golf team move past three teams and nearly catch a fourth on the final day of the West Texas Intercollegiate. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was played at the 6,977-yard, par 71 Diamondback Course in Abilene, Texas.
Phillips fired an even-par 71 while Porter posted a one-over 72 and helped the Bulldogs finish with a final round 295. SWOSU pushed itself into eighth place with a 36-hole total of 592. The Bulldogs began the final day in two-way tie for 10th.
Texas Wesleyan was the overall team champion thanks to first and second-place finishes by Mitch Hendon and Paco Saracho. Hendon won the medalist honors with a seven-under 135, while Saracho was one stroke back at six-under, 136.
LSC schools Southeastern Oklahoma State University finished third at 578, Central Oklahoma was fourth with 583, Abilene Christian was fifth at 585 and Midwestern State was seventh at 588.
The SWOSU golfers and their finish are as follows: Phillips in 13th with a 74-71-145, Porter in 25th with 75-72-147, Pat McCarthy in 31st with a 75-74-149, Scott Kulczycki in 43rd with 73-79-152 and Kody Tucker in 85th with an 88-78-166.
A total of 90 golfers from 18 teams competed in the event.
SWOSU’s next event will be at the Territory Classic in Duncan. Opening round is Monday, Sept. 17.
