Golf Finishes Fifth at Regional

AUSTIN, Texas – The Southwestern Oklahoma State University men’s golf team finished its 2008 season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Division II Men’s South Central Regional Tournament. The Bulldogs rallied back from a slow start to climb past two other teams on the final two days of the tournament.

SWOSU shot rounds of 303, 290 and 296 and finished with a 37-pver par score of 889 on the Grey Rock Golf Club Course in Austin, Texas.

St. Edward’s, the host institution, was the runaway winner with an 11-under par score of 841. The Hilltoppers victory advanced them to the NCAA National Championships later this month in Houston. Abilene Christian was second with a score of 872, 31 strokes behind the leader. Cameron was third with a score of 879 and Southeastern Oklahoma was fourth at 884. Central Oklahoma, Northeastern State and St. Mary’s completed the eight-team field.

SWOSU’s top finisher was Pat McCarthy who finished in a tie for seventh with a two-over par score of 215 in the 45-person field.

Cameron’s Peter Svajilen was the medalist with a five-under par score of 208.

Other SWOSU golfers and their finish were as follows: Luke Phillips in 10th at six-over par, 219; Tyler Porter in 29th with a 15-over par, 228; Scott Kulczycki in 32nd with a 17-over par, 230 and Ben Claussen was 44th with a score of 240.
