Men Finish 8th at ACU

ABILENE, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State University bettered its first day score by seven strokes but still found itself passed by two other teams and slipped to an eighth-place finish in the season’s first golf tournament. The SWOSU men followed a 301 Monday score with a 294 Tuesday round at the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate in Abilene, Texas.
SWOSU, which stood alone in sixth place after Monday’s round, was passed by Texas A&M-Commerce and Newman University. TAMUC posted a 283 on Tuesday which moved them four spots on the leaderboard and tied eventual winner St. Edward’s with the best team score of the day.
St. Edward's lived up to its No. 3 national ranking and paired its final day 283 with 276 opener to win by 10 strokes over second-place Cameron University.
The hosts from Abilene Christian University finished third at 575. Cameron came from two shots behind the Wildcats after the first round to move past the Wildcats into second place in the final standings.
Collin Mayer led the way for St. Edwards as he fired back-to-back rounds of three-under-par 68 to win the individual medalist title with a six-under-par 136. Peter Svajlen of Cameron finished second at 138 (71-67) with Cyril Bouniol (70-69), Kevin Doskocil of Texas Wesleyan (70-69) and Patrick Hanauer of ACU (68-71) finished tied for third at 139. Those five golfers were named to the all-tournament team.
SWOSU’s best finish was turned in by Scott Kulczycki who fired a three-over par score of 145 which placed him in a tie for 17th. His one-over par score on Monday of 72 was the the low score of any SWOSU player. Other SWOSU golfers and their finish are as follows: Luke Phillips in 28th place with a five-over score of 147, Dakota Brown in 44th place at nine-over park, 151; Ben Claussen finished in 51st with a 11-over par, 153 and Brad Dickson was 62nd with a score of 14-over par, 156.
A total of 15 teams and 77 golfers competed in the tournament.
