Men Slip to Ninth

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southwestern Oklahoma State University was unable to keep its hold on eighth place and dropped one spot to finish in ninth at the St. Mary’s Men’s Golf Invitational. The Bulldogs shot a 300 on Tuesday and finished with a team score of 900, two shots behind eighth-place Northwood Institute of Texas.

The University of Texas was the winner of the event with an 875, followed by Kansas Newman in second place with an 878. A total of 14 schools competed in the event, including four Lone Star Conference schools at San Antonio’s Dominion Country Club.

Northeastern State was third with an 881, Midwestern State and Cameron tied for 10th at 902 and West Texas A&M was 13th at 937.

SWOSU’s Ben Claussen, who stood in ninth-place after two rounds, finished with a final-round 77 to place in a tie for 17th. Claussen, a junior from Trophy Club, Texas, was SWOSU’s top finisher in the event that featured 76 golfers.

Nick May of Kansas Newman was the wire-to-wire winning posting scores of 69-72-69 to finish at six-under 210. He was three strokes better than second-place Alex Moon of Texas.

Other SWOSU golfers and their finish are as follows: Luke Phillips in 30th with a 77-76-72-225; Scott Kulczycki in 35th with a 77-74-77-228; Keith Erickson in 35th with a 74-80-74, 228 and Dakota Brown was 64th with a score of 77-77-88 with 242.

SWOSU will next play Oct. 6 at the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Invitational.
