October 13, 2008
DUNCAN, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University found itself on the verge of collecting one of its most prestigious golf tournament titles in a number of years. The Bulldogs sit one stroke out of first-place after the first round of the Territory Classic. The two-day, 36 hole tournament is hosted by Cameron University and will conclude Tuesday at the Territory Golf and Country Club in Duncan, Okla.
The Bulldogs had two golfers – Tyler Porter and Luke Phillips -- shoot and even-par 72 and counted no score higher than a 75 on their way to a 293. SWOSU, along with St. Edward’s, share second place and are just one stroke behind the University of Central Oklahoma’s 292.
The tournament remains up for grabs as half the tournament field is within 10 shots of the Bronchos. Arkansas Tech is in fourth place at 296 and Abilene Christian is in fifth at 298.
A total of 14 teams and 75 golfers make up the field.
Individually, Zac Pool of East Central University shot a four-under, 68, and is one stroke ahead of UCO’s Austin Bowman.
Porter and Phillips are among a group of three-golfers who each shot an even-par 72. They are in tie for sixth place.
