Jeffries Wins GCCC All-Around

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University collected a season-high 470 points to take third place in the men’s competition at the Garden City Community College Rodeo. Oklahoma Panhandle State was the top team finishing with 605 points followed by Ft. Scott with 545 points.

SWOSU’s 470 point total was thanks in large part to Luke Jeffries who was named the All-Around Cowboy after the event. The Homedale, Idaho freshman was third in the calf roping competition and finished sixth in team roping and became the first SWOSU cowboy this year to win the all-around.

In calf roping, Jeffries posted a time of 8.2 seconds to finish second in the long round. He placed third in the short round and ended up third in the average.

In team roping, Jeffries, along with his partner Tanner Houston had a time of 6.6 seconds in the long round. The two then finished sixth in the short round and average.

Cody Teel did well in bareback riding finishing sixth in the short round. He did not score in the average.

In steer wrestling, two SWOSU cowboys competed in both the long and short rounds. Houston finished sixth in the long run, short run and average while Cody Johnson was among the top 10 competitors after the long round.

SWOSU dominated the bull riding competition with Jesse Jackson, Daniel Gardner and Brad Abbe each scoring points. Abbe finished second in the average after posting a 76-point ride in the long round and a first-place ride of 82 in the short round. Jackson was third in the average after an 84-point, first-place ride in the long round and a sixth-place ride in the short round. Gardner finished second in the long round with an 83 but did not score in the short round or average.

SWOSU’s next rodeo will be Friday, March 7 at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas.
