Schaffeld Wins Steer Wrestling

PRATT, KS. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University cowboy Greg Schaffeld was the top point producer for the men’s rodeo team, winning the steer wrestling competition at the Pratt Community College Rodeo.
Schaffeld, a junior from The Dalles, Oregon, had a time of 4.1 seconds in the long round to put himself into first place in steer wrestling. He followed with a third-place effort in the short round which allowed him to stay at the top in the overall average.
Fort Scott won the team competition with 345 points, followed by Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in a tie for second with 320 points. The rodeo was the first time in 11 straight rodeos that Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
SWOSU also got good showings from Jared Parker and Cody Teel in the bareback riding competition. Parker put himself in first place after a 75-point ride in the long round. He slipped to fifth in the short round and ended up second in the average. Teel narrowly qualified for the short round and then split third-and-fourth in the round to finish sixth in the average.
SWOSU had two cowboys, Thomas Merrit and Kyle Patterson, do well in calf roping. Both qualified for the final round in the event thanks to their top 10 placing. Merrit wasn’t done yet as he finished sixth in the short round and sixth in the average.
Tyler Vogt, a native of Corn, was SWOSU’s only other point producer in the rodeo finishing among the top 10 in the bull riding event. He finished in a fourth-place tie in the long run with a 72-point ride, but did not score in the short round.
SWOSU will next compete on Nov. 6 at the Northwestern Oklahoma State University rodeo in Alva.
