October 6, 2006
DENTON, TEXAS – Southwestern Oklahoma State University climbed back into the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer race thanks to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Texas Woman’s Friday in Denton, Texas.
The Bulldogs got goals from Meghan Vance and Carrie Dumbauld to upend the Pioneers for the second time in as many years. SWOSU improved to 5-6-1 and more importantly 2-2 in the LSC standings. TWU, a tournament qualifier a year ago, fell to 4-9-2 and 1-3-1 in league play.
SWOSU is attempting to qualify for its first-ever berth in the LSC Postseason tournament by finishing sixth or better in the 10-team league standings.
Vance scored the game’s first goal in the 27th minute when she took a well-timed pass by teammate Cheslea Edwards and snuck a shot past TWU goalkeeper Aly Vincent.
SWOSU added what would become a much-needed insurance goal later when Dumbauld netter her season high seventh goal of the season in the game’s 75th minute. Melissa Terrell assisted on the play.
The goal became critically important as TWU scored next when Emily Meinen blasted a shot past SWOSU keeper Keli Bass in the game’s 83rd minute to make what would be the final score, 2-1, in favor of SWOSU.
The Bulldogs will next play Sunday against conference leader Texas A&M-Commerce in Commerce, Texas. The next home game is Friday, Oct. 13 against Eastern New Mexico.
