Soccer Eager for Start

August 15, 2008

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University soccer coachJoe Bradley has been trying his hardest to wait patiently for the beginning of the 2008 season. It’s not been easy for the coach who is about to embark on his eighth campaign with the Bulldogs.

Bradley is bubbling with energy and eager to see the results of his massive roster overhaul that promises the Bulldogs a dramatic new look on the soccer field.

The coach thought about the considerable changes almost immediately after last year’s team stumbled their way through a 1-17-1 season when injuries, misfortune and bad luck all joined forces against them. With last year erased from memory, Bradley focused on infusing his roster with players that had more speed and greater athleticism.

He recruited many of the top high schools and club teams in North Texas and Oklahoma and managed to sign a number of talented players who fit the team’s most pressing needs.

“I think people will be really surprised when they see us this year,” Bradley said. “It’s been amazing the first few days of practice. We are doing things with so much more pace and tempo. At times it looks a little frantic; but the end result will be something very positive.”

The extreme makeover includes 11 new players who make up the 21-person roster. With the change, Bradley had worries about team chemistry and how quickly they learn how to play as a team.

“I think as a group they really enjoy being around each other in practice, meetings and just about anytime,” Bradley said. “We’re much closer as a unit than in past. With this many new faces, it has allowed us to start with a clean slate.”

Bradley’s hesitant to pinpoint any particular player who will be key to the team’s success. He did say that all the starting positions are up for grabs.

“We’ve had some good competition in areas where we need to be better,” Bradley said. “No matter who ends up starting, all will be counted on to play. Depth won’t be a problem because we will use everybody.”

The Bulldogs begin the season Saturday, Aug. 30 when they play in Wichita, Kan. against Northwest Missouri State. SWOSU’s first home game is Friday, Sept. 12 against Newman University.
