Soccer Beats Wayne State
August 31, 2008
WICHITA, Kan. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University showed why it thinks this year’s soccer team will be one of the most improved in the Lone Star Conference. The Bulldogs were 1-0 winners against Nebraska’s Wayne State University Sunday in Wichita, Kan. SWOSU ended up splitting its two matches at the Kansas Newman Invitational after losing to Northwest Missouri State in a rain-shortened match Saturday by a 2-0 score.
SWOSU, now 1-1 on the year, has already matched the win total of last year’s team and has 17 more games remaining to show just how much better it will be.
Lorina Salinas, a 5-4 freshman from Red Oak, Texas, was the hero of the game getting past Wayne State keeper Rachel Fuchs with a nifty one-on-one move to score the only goal in the 78th minute. Salinas had fired six other shots on the day, three of them were on goal.
In addition to Salinas, SWOSU sparkled on the defensive end. WSU had only five shots on goal, all of which were stopped by SWOSU keeper Chelsey Dodd in the first half. Dodd, a freshman from Lewisville, Texas, split time with Lauren Mason who took over duties in the final half. The two combined for the shutout.
SWOSU had 16 shots, two more than Wayne State. The Bulldogs had 11 of their 16 total in the second half as they turned up the offensive pressure.
SWOSU will play two more games on the road Friday, Sept. 5 against Central Missouri State and Sunday, Sept. 7 against Truman State. Both games will be played on the campus of the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. SWOSU’s first home game is Friday, Sept. 12 against Newman University.
