Soccer Loses to ECU, 3-1

October 24, 2008

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University put forward a determined effort but it was not enough to overcome East Central University as the Bulldogs were 4-1 losers Friday in women’s soccer in Weatherford.

SWOSU scored for the second straight game and played well in spots but could not take advantage of scoring opportunities when they became available. The loss left SWOSU at 2-14 on the year and 0-7 in Lone Star Conference play. ECU improved to 5-8-2 and 1-5-1 in league play.

SWOSU scored the game’s last goal when Elyse Berta knocked in a shot after a well-timed pass from teammate Melissa Terrell in the game’s 86th minute. The goal was Berta’s first of the year after several unlucky bounces did not go her way.

The Bulldogs had 14 shots with four on goal while ECU managed 24 shots with 14 on goal. SWOSU used two keepers, Becky Hilterbran and Chelsea Dodd, the two together combined for 10 saves.

ECU scored the game’s first four goals. Shannon McKin got the Tigers on the board in the fifth minute, followed by Sarah Duval in the 36th minute and Whitney Watts in the 42nd minute. The Tigers concluded their scoring in the 83rd minute when Charli Stewart scored to make it 4-0.

SWOSU will next play Sunday at 2 p.m. against Northeastern, a team the Bulldogs defeated last year in Tahlequah.
