SWOSU Stumbles at UCO Tournament

Mustang, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State ran into difficulties against some of the top softball-playing teams in the region, going winless in six games at the Central Oklahoma Invitational. The Bulldogs lost 5-0 to Angelo State, 5-1 to Tarleton State, 6-2 to Pittsburg State and twice to St. Gregory’s by scores of 2-1 and 1-0.The losses left SWOSU’s record at 2-15 overall. The Bulldogs open Lone Star Conference North Division play Tuesday when they host defending North champ the University of Central Oklahoma for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
SWOSU best winning opportunities came in both of the St. Gregory’s games.
In the first St. Gregory’s game, SWOSU trailed 2-1 after five innings to play only to threaten in its half of the sixth. Sarah Hamilton led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. She stole third but was stranded there as the final two Bulldog batters struck out and grounded out to end the inning.
Freshman pitcher Ashton Garrett put in a solid outing in the second game against St. Gregory’s. Garrett (1-2) scattered four hits and allowed one run through six innings of work. St. Gregory’s only run came in their half of the fifth.
SWOSU had runners in scoring position in four of the seven innings but were unable to push any one across home plate. The Bulldogs best chance came in the top of the fifth when Keri Glidewell led off with a bunt single and stole second base. She advanced to third on a single by Jennifer Buccola. Glidewell was left at third as next two SWOSU batters ended the inning with a pair of ground outs.
