Softball Team Drops Pair to UCO

March 7, 2006

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State pushed Central Oklahoma into some tight spots before the Bronchos managed to wiggle free and sweep a softball doubleheader 3-1 and 4-2 Tuesday in Weatherford.

SWOSU, now 2-17 on the year and 0-2 in Lone Star Conference North play, will resume action with a Saturday doubleheader against the same Bronchos in Edmond.

In game one, SWOSU freshman pitcher Alex Zukerman again had a solid outing on the mound but remained winless in seven decisions. Zukerman scattered six hits and gave up three runs while striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.

SWOSU tied the first game 1-1 when Jennifer Buccola came through with a two-out single that scored April Nash in the second inning. The game remained tied until UCO scored a pair in the fourth to go ahead for good at 3-1.

In the second game, SWOSU pitcher Ashton Garrett helped keep the game tight after entering the game in relief of starter and eventual loser Kaci Carpenter (1-6) in the first inning. Garrett worked six and one-third innings, allowed five hits and two runs. She struck out five and walked none.

Trailing 4-1 in the sixth, SWOSU threatened when Whittney Beech led off with a single, advanced to second and then scored on hit by teammate Crystal Clay to make it 4-2. Te Berry then walked to put the tying run on base but the threat and inning was ended when Laci Keplinger hit into a ground ball out.
