SWOSU Takes Finale From Cameron

March 27, 2006

Lawton, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State used a gutsy effort by pitcher Alex Zukerman and broke through with a 7-5, extra-inning victory over Cameron in softball action Saturday in Lawton. The win allowed the Bulldogs to avoid being swept by their conference rival after losing both ends of a doubleheader 3-0 and 9-4 the day earlier in Weatherford and Saturday’s first game 2-0 in Lawton.

Playing in her hometown, Zukerman pitched through 13 tough innings Saturday. She went six innings in a first game start and then came on in relief and worked the final seven innings in the second game.

The win improved her overall record to 3-11 on the year while the Bulldogs moved to 8-23 overall and 5-7 in the Lone Star Conference North division. Cameron is now 19-21 and tied with SWOSU at 5-7.

In Saturday’s second game, Whittney Beech and Kristen Scott doubled in succession as the Bulldogs broke open a 3-3 tie with four runs in the 10th. Beech came to the plate after Cameron had intentionally walked April Nash to load the bases with two outs. The plan backfired as Beech came through with the clutch hit that scored Sarah Hamilton and Keri Glidewell. Scott followed with a double that scored Nash and Beech to make it 7-3.

Cameron managed two runs in their half of the 10th but Zukerman settled down and got the final three outs after allowing a two-run homer earlier in the innings.

SWOSU sent the game into extra innings with a three-run sixth inning. Crystal Clay had a run-scoring single before Nash tied the game at 3-3 with a two-out single that scored pinch runner Erin Hutton and Glidewell.

The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday as they travel to face Southeastern Oklahoma State in a doubleheader in Durant. The same two teams meet Saturday, April 1 for a twinbill in Weatherford. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
