February 25, 2008
WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University bounced back from a disappointing first game and crushed visiting New Mexico Highlands by a 9-1 margin to gain a split of a softball doubleheader Monday in Weatherford. NMHU won the first game 6-1.
The split kept SWOSU’s record at 5-5 on the year while the Cowgirls are now 3-10 on the season.
Alex Zukerman dominated Highlands in the second game allowing just two hits and one run to improve her record to 3-2 on the season. The Lawton junior struckout six and walked one while retiring the last nine batters she faced.
SWOSU peppered NMHU with 10 hits in the nightcap with Teryn Mazurkewich, Stacy Creger and Brittany Strickland getting two hits apiece. The game was close with SWOSU holding a 2-1 lead through four innings before NMHU committed a series of miscues in the fifth and sixth inning that allowed the Bulldogs seven runs.
In the first game, SWOSU led 1-0 through five innings and appeared to be in good shape with Strickland in control on the mound. However, the Cowgirls got on track with three in the sixth and added the same in the seventh to take a 6-1 win.
Strickland got the loss after ending the game allowing six runs, five of which were earned. She gave up nine hits and fell to 2-3 with the loss.
SWOSU will next play at home Saturday, March 1 when it opens Lone Star Conference North Division play with a doubleheader against Midwestern State University. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
