Softball Beats NSU Twice
March 1, 2009
WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University finished its series with Northeastern State University by taking both ends of a softball doubleheader Sunday by scores of 11-4 and 5-2. The victories evened the Bulldogs overall record at 8-8 and moved to 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division.
SWOSU will next play at home Tuesday against Midwestern State. The doubleheader is set to begin at 1 p.m.
Brittany Strickland's walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh sent the Bulldogs into a joyous celebration and completed an amazing comeback in the night cap. SWOSU trailed 2-1 entering its last at bat before Laiken Lester led off with a double. Stacy Creger reached on a walk and Alex Zukerman made it safely on a fielder's choice. Strickland then sent a blast that just cleared the left center field fence and allowed the Bulldogs to go out winners, 5-2.
Katie Raines got the win on the mound for SWOSU to improve to 2-2 on the year. She went the entire seven innings, scattering eight hits while allowing two runs, one of which was earned.
In the 11-4 win in game one, SWOSU jumped ahead 6-4 after a five-run fourth inning. Lester drove in a pair of runs with a single and Strickland put the Bulldogs in front to stay with a two-RBI double.
SWOSU added another run in the fifth to go up 7-4 and put the game out of reach by scoring four more in the sixth to push ahead 11-4.
Zukerman got the win on the mound to even her record at 3-3. She scattered three hits through seven innings and allowed four runs, none of which were earned. She struck out four and walked four and got her self out of several tight spots throughout the game.
