March 3, 2009
WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University found itself stymied by a pair of outstanding pitching efforts by Midwestern State in a softball doubleheader Tuesday in Weatherford. The Bulldogs were beaten 15-0 in the first game and 6-2 in the nightcap. The same two teams will meet again later this week in Wichita Falls, Texas.
The losses dropped SWOSU to 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the Lone Star Conference North Division. MSU improved to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in the LSC North.
MSU pitcher Katie Peterson was dominant in the opener pitching a five-inning perfect game. She allowed no hits, struck out 13 batters, including the first nine she faced. The win improved her record to 7-3 on the season.
MSU roughed up SWOSU ace Alex Zukerman with seven runs and six hits through the first two innings before she was lifted in favor of relief. Zukerman took the loss and dropped to 3-4 on the year.
In the second game, MSU pitcher Brittany Tanner was much of the same for the SWOSU hitters. The Bulldogs did collect five hits off her but only scored a pair of runs. Tanner struck out 10 batters and improved to 6-3 with the win.
Laiken Lester was SWOSU's offensive star in the game collecting two of the team's five hits. She led off the game with a solo home run that put the Bulldogs in front 1-0.
The Bulldogs added their final run in the seventh when Lester reached on a single and then advanced on another single by Stacy Creger. Lester scored on an RBI single by Brittany Strickland.
Katie Raines took the loss on the mound for SWOSU. She allowed eight hits and six runs through six innings of work. Her record is now 2-3 on the year.
