Softball Drops Pair to Cameron
April 7, 2009
LAWTON, Okla. - Southwestern Oklahoma State University watched as its offensive production falter at the worst of times as the Bulldogs were swept by Cameron University in a softball doubleheader Tuesday in Lawton. SWOSU lost by scores of 8-0 and 9-1. The two teams will resume their series Friday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Weatherford.
The losses left SWOSU at 14-22 overall and 6-12 in the Lone Star Conference North Division while Cameron improved to 28-16 and 13-5 in the division.
Just one week after rattling East Central with 32 runs and hitting .400 through four games, the Bulldogs managed just six total hits and squeaked out a .176 average at the plate against the Aggies.
In the first game, SWOSU was limited to one hit on the strong pitching effort by Cameron's Ashton McBride. McBride allowed only a fifth-inning single by Kristyn Shawver to ruin what would have been a no-hitter.
Katie Raines held the Aggies scoreless until the third inning before giving up a run. Cameron added two more in the fourth and five in the fifth to force the run rule after five innings at 8-0. Raines, who fell to 5-8 on the year, allowed six hits in four innings of work.
In the second game, SWOSU's lone run came in the first inning when Shawver reached base on a single then later scored on a RBI double by Brittany Strickland.
Shawver finished the game with two hits. She ended the day with one-half (3) of the team's total hits (6).
Senior Alex Zukerman, pitching in her hometown of Lawton, threw well but received little support in the field or at the plate. She allowed eight hits and one-half of her eight runs were unearned. Her record fell to 4-8 with the loss.
