Volleyball Team Drops Pair

October 21, 2006

Weatherford, OK - Southwestern Oklahoma State University had a chance to test its abilities against the top two volleyball teams in the Lone Star Conference North Division with back-to-back matches against Cameron University and the University of Central Oklahoma. The Bulldogs put forward a gritty attempt but fell short losing 3-0 in both matches.

The losses eliminated SWOSU’s chances of qualifying for the conference’s post-season tournament. SWOSU, now 10-21 overall and 2-8 in the LSC North, close the season with road matches against Midwestern State and Texas Woman’s.

In the match Thursday against Cameron, the Aggies came away with a 30-25, 30-23, 30-20 win thanks in part to the strong effort by Taran Turner who had a game-high 15 kills. The Bulldogs were close in the first game and drew within two points at 27-25 when Kasandra Gurtner delivered a powerful kill to bring a cheer from the crowd. The Aggies responded winning the next three points to take the first game 30-25. The next two were not as close as Cameron pulled away with a string of solid play through each.

Against UCO, the Bulldogs were hoping to find the same type of success and enthusiasm that sparked them in last year’s home match with the Bronchos. In 2005, SWOSU lost three-of-four games, but it was a 30-11 victory over UCO in a game that created the optimism entering Friday’s match.

UCO quickly dispelled that notion taking the first game 30-26 and then delivering its own 30-11 beating in the second. The Bronchos closed out the contest with a 30-23 win in game three to complete the sweep.
