SWOSU Beats Back MACU

WEATHERFORD, Okla --Southwestern Oklahoma State University beat back a determined effort by upstart Mid America Christian University and emerged with a hard-fought 3-2 volleyball victory Tuesday in Weatherford. SWOSU won by scores of 30-16, 30-21, 26-30, 27-30 and 15-8 to improve its record to 3-2 on the year. The game was the first of the season for the Evangels.

Kasandra Gurtner along with teammates Paula Harry and Kacia Sandburg provided a relentless attack at the net peppering MACU with 39 of the team’s 62 combined kills. Gurtner had high honors with 16 kills while Harry was next with 12 and Sandburg followed with 11.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 62 kills and 38 errors in 205 attacks for a .117 hitting percentage. Meanwhile, the Evangels had nearly as many errors (44) as kills (42) and finished with a .010 attack percentage.

SWOSU looked to be in for an easy night leading the first game 11-0 and 15-2 before MACU got on track. MACU took a pair of tight contests in games three and four before SWOSU pulled away for an easy 15-8 victory in the fifth and deciding game.

Defensively, SWOSU was led by Janna Green with 24 digs and Gurtner was again strong at the net blocking a total of five shots.

SWOSU will next play four matches at the St. Edward's University Invitational Friday and Saturday in Austin, Texas. Games will be against Arkansas Monticello, Northwest Missouri, Nova Southeastern and St. Edward's. SWOSU's next home game will be Tuesday, Sept. 4 against St. Gregory's. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
