Volleyball Wins Home Finale
October 27, 2007
WEATHERFORD, Okla. -- Southwestern Oklahoma State University gave a rousing sendoff to six senior volleyball players and then ensured their memories would be positive about their last home game with a 3-0 wipeout of visiting Angelo State. The scores were 30-14, 31-29, 30-27.
The victory was SWOSU’s second in three games and left its overall record at 12-19 and 3-7 in the Lone Star Conference. The Bulldogs moved into a tie for 10th place in the LSC race. However, the late-season push came too late as the Bulldogs were eliminated from the LSC tournament after seventh-place Tarleton State and eighth-place Texas A&M-Kingsville won Saturday. Both TSU and TAMUK have five conference wins and have already beaten SWOSU earlier this year.
SWOSU closes the season with road games next week against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman’s.
Seniors Amber Coles, Kasandra Gurtner, Paula Harry, Amanda Ortega, Janna Green and Tennessee Brown all shared starting assignments and put SWOSU on good footing early with a 30-14 win in game one.
Gurtner, the school’s all-time leader in several categories, was again the hero Saturday coming up with 16 kills, nearly twice as many as second-place Kacia Sandburg’s nine. Still it was Sandburg who had back-to-back kills in the critical second game that allowed SWOSU to win 31-29.
SWOSU led throughout game three only to see ASU move within one at 28-27. The next two points were for the Bulldogs as Coles smashed a kill and Harry ended the match with a service ace with SWOSU a 30-27 winner.
