Volleyball Travels to OPSU

August 30, 2008

WEATHERFORD, Okla. ---  Southwestern Oklahoma State University will have a chance to get back on the winning track when its volleyball team plays four matches at the Oklahoma Panhandle State University Invitational beginning Friday, Sept. 5. The games will have a greater significance than anticipated as the Bulldogs are looking to rebound from a tough start. SWOSU will play Sterling College and New Mexico Highlands on Friday before closing the weekend with matches against Colorado Christian and the host, OPSU.

Statistically, SWOSU will need to better their attack percentage and improve their team blocking to reverse the latest outcomes. The Bulldogs attack percentage stands at .121 after the first four games compared to their opponents’ mark of .211. SWOSU hit .147 last season when the Bulldogs tied for eighth in the Lone Star Conference and finished with a 14-19 overall record.

On the defensive side, SWOSU has 10 fewer blocks than its opponents in the early part of the season. Last year, SWOSU was relatively even with its opponents in the block category grounding 219 attacks to 226 for its opponent.

Although winless, SWOSU has not been without stars. Senior Kacia Sandburg, as expected, leads the team in kills averaging nearly 2.50 per set. She is, however, being chased by freshman newcomer Breawn Waynes who is averaging 2.40 kills per set.
