October 4, 2008
ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University won one of two matches during a weekend trip to Arkansas that saw them play Henderson State and then Ouachita Baptist. The Bulldogs beat HSU on Friday by a score of 21-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-17 before losing to OBU on Saturday by a 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20 margin.
The split left SWOSU’s overall record at 7-11. The Bulldogs will next play Tuesday at home against Bacone College, an NAIA opponent, who they routed earlier this year.
In the win against Henderson, SWOSU raised its level after a spotty first game in which the Bulldogs hit only .075 and were beaten 25-21. SWOSU quickly distanced itself from HSU, hitting .350, .175, .276 in successive games and by the end won easily.
SWOSU finished the game with 55 kills, against 23 errors on 140 attacks for a hitting percentage of .215. The Bulldogs had four players finish with 10 or more kills for the first time this season. Kacia Sandburg was again tops with 15, followed by Jennifer Naramore with 12, Breawn Waynes with 11 and Staci West added 10.
Against Ouachita, SWOSU played well finishing the game hitting .227 but had little answer against OBU’s top player, Libby Merritt who had 21 kills in only 34 attempts. The 21 kills was the most by any player against the Bulldogs this season.
Naramore and Sandburg each shared top honors with the Bulldogs collecting 15 kills. They combined for 30 of the team’s 45 total.
