Volleyball Closes out Season

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma State University ended its 2008 volleyball season with a spirited match against its arch rival Central Oklahoma Thursday in Weatherford. Central Oklahoma rallied for a 3-2 victory after trailing for much of the match. UCO won by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21 and 15-9.

The loss left the Bulldogs with a 14-18 overall record and placed them at 3-10 in the final Lone Star Conference standings. UCO, meanwhile kept alive its tournament hopes improves to 13-20 overall and 6-7 in league play.

The match marked the final game for four SWOSU seniors – Kacia Sandburg, Ashley Cluad, Maddie Cummins and Staci West – who were recognized in a brief ceremony before the game. All four played and played well in their career finale.

West had season-highs in both kills (16) and digs (19) while Sandburg was her usual spectacular self coming up with 14 kills against only four errors.

As a team, SWOSU hit .180 with 62 kills, against 30 errors in 178 attempts. UCO saved its best for last hitting .412 in the final game to finish with a .210 mark as a team with 63 kills against 28 errors in 167 attempts.

In the fifth and final game, SWOSU tied it at 7-7 after a kill by Emily Walter before the Bronchos ran off a string of three straight to go ahead 10-7. UCO closed out the Bulldogs with back-to-back kills by Meghan Wedberg and Jessica Legako.
