General Information

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College (CATC) is a product of extensive planning by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU). SWOSU serves as host for CATC as it progresses through its initial developmental stages. Once CATC attains recognition as a fully functional college, it will seek autonomy and then apply for accreditation through a regional accreditation agency, such as the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. Once accredited CATC will be allowed to manage federal student financial aid programs; also its courses will be accredited and transferable to accredited four-year degree granting institutions. Once this process is under way, CATC will be eligible to apply for federal recognition through membership with the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). As an
AIHEC member, CATC will become eligible for federal assistance and capable of competing for federal grants and other educational resources. When CATC gains accreditation, it will join with approximately 35 other AIHEC tribal colleges and universities located throughout the western part of the United States.

CATC is located on the main campus of SWOSU in temporary quarters in the “Old” Science Building, First floor, Suite 104, in Weatherford, Oklahoma. CATC opening day was August 25, 2006, based on a Memorandum of Understanding entered into between the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College Board of Regents and SWOSU and signed May 25, 2006.

Programs of studies are being developed that will lead to the awarding of an associate of science degree arranged through the college. CATC staff are working with various groups to develop associate’s degrees and certificate programs.
