Momentum Indicator Charts and Economic Statistics
The momentum charts presented in this section use annualized data to facilitate comparison of growth rates of various time periods, while momentum track charts include an additional feature to track the movements of growth rates over various time periods. Using this method, growth rates are adjusted to reflect the amount a variable would have changed over a year’s time had it continued to grow at the given rate. The result is a percentage change that is easily comparable to other annualized data.
The vertical axis measures the 3-month average annualized percentage change and the horizontal axis measures the year-over-year percentage change.
The momentum charts are classified into four categories:
- Leading – Growth rates show a gain in momentum over the previous quarter’s level and year-over-year percentage change is higher than a year earlier.
- Improving – Growth rates show a gain in momentum from the previous quarter despite the year-over-year percentage change being lower than the year before.
- Lagging – Growth rates show a decline in momentum over the previous quarter level and year-over-year percentage change is lower than last year.
- Slipping – Growth rates show a decline in momentum from the previous quarter despite the year-over-year percentage change being higher than the year before.
The momentum charts encompass counties and cities residing in the Southwestern Oklahoma Impact Coalition (SOIC) region and the state of Oklahoma. All data used in the charts was obtained from the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission (OESC) and Origins - Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Online Database.
