Independent Agencies and Government Corporations
- CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)
Provides knowledge and takes action to ensure the national security of the United States by collecting intelligence, providing prompt and objective analyses, and conducting covert action at the direction of the president to preempt threats or achieve U.S. policy objectives.
- EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
Protect human health and the environment by developing and enforcing regulations, offering financial assistance and sponsorship to state programs and initiatives, and perform research, disclose and publish findings.
- FCC (Federal Communications Commission)
Responsible for regulating interstate and international communications by radio, telelvision, wire, satellite and cable.
- Federal Reserve System
Established by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, it conducts the Nation's monetary policy by influencing money and credit conditions in the economy, regulates banking institutions, protects the rights of the consumer, maintains stability of financial market, and provides financial services the government, financial institutions and the Nation's populace.
- Library of Congress
The Nation's oldest federal cultural institution, the Library of Congress serves as the research arm of Congress and it is the largest library in the world, with nearly 128 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. Its' mission is to make resources available to Congress and the American public, sustaining and preserving a collection of knowledge for future generations.
- NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
Created in 1958, NASA is a leading force in scientific research and aerospace exploration. Four areas of responsibility are: space flight and mission program development, astronomical research, aeronautic research, and space tracking and data network to coordinate communications between ground facilities and interplanetary spacecraft.
- NARA (National Archives and Records Administration)
Collect and preserve national historical publications and records for continued access of information for this and future generations.
- National Endowment for the Arts
Dedicated to supporting excellence in the arts, both new and established; bringing the arts to all Americans; and providing leadership in arts education.
- National Endowment for the Humanities
Dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
- National Science Foundation
Created in 1950, the NSF promotes the progress of science, advancing the national health, prosperity, and welfare, and to secure the national defense.
- SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission)
Created to boost investor confidence after the Stock Market Crash of 1929, the SEC serves to protect investors and maintain the integrity of the securities market.
- Social Security Commission
Created by the Social Security Act of 1935, the SSA governs the federal social insurance programs (disability insurance, health insurance, retirement, appeals, etc.).
- USPS (United States Postal Service)
Created by Congress in 1775, the U.S. Postal Service continues to collect, sort, and transport mail to local and international destinations.
