Edgar Cruz, an internationally known award winning classical and fingerstyle guitarist from Oklahoma City, will perform at the Fine Arts Center on the campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University on November 20 at 7:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by the SWOSU Library. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend this extraordinary and entertaining event. Edgar Cruz has been named Oklahomas Top Performing Artist and Acoustic Guitarist for over ten years by the Oklahoma Gazette.
Each year he performs over 200 concerts and has played throughout America, Europe and South America. He has been a headliner at the Chet Atkins Festival in Nashville, Tennessee since 1995 and is a strong icon at most festivals in Oklahoma, including the Festival of the Arts, Paseo Festival, Sunfest, Global Oklahoma, and more. He has received numerous civic acknowledgments for his contributions to various charitable events. Cruz also performs for a wide variety of events, including concerts, festivals, weddings, receptions, banquets, anniversaries, birthdays, schools, churches, conventions, fiestas, memorials, masterclasses, restaurants, and other special occasions. Cruz blends classical techniques with modern songs in a crowd-pleasing combo that leaves fans marveling at his virtuosity. Those who have witnessed Edgar Cruzs performance immediately become entranced at the precision, speed and complexity with which his fingers strike the strings of his guitar to create a symphony of sound that is unusual to just one instrument.
Cruz offers an incredible live repertoire of "The Greatest Hits of the Guitar". Malagueñ Classical Gas, Bohemian Rhapsody, In the Mood, Dueling Banjos, Hotel California, A Classical Medley, Medleys On the Fly, and some Latin favorites are just a few examples. At his concerts, he encourages audience participation, including clapping, singing, dancing, snapping, and "oles and yee-haws". Cruz's CDs and DVDs cover moods from Latin, Classical, International, Rock, Jazz, Mariachi, Romantic, and Christmas, to some originals.
Some of his CD titles include Pieces of Edgar (2007), Sweet Georgia Blue (with David B. Hooten) (2005), Guitarras de Amor with Ruben Romero) (2003), and Guitarras de Baile(with Ruben Romero) (2006). His DVDs include Arranging for Solo Guitar: The Queen Titles by Video Progressions, which earned him an Accolade Award in 2005 and Gallery: Spanish Blood - The Guitar Music of Edgar Cruz which was an OETA Emmy Award Winning Documentary in 2005. Edgar Cruzs interest in music began at an early age when he began playing the guitar with his father at restaurants and clubs in Oklahoma City. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from Oklahoma City University.
